In Memory of Merchel Alston
The LOFT LGBTQ+ Community Center is honored to celebrate the life and legacy of Merchel Denice Alston, beloved wife of LOFT Board Director Carly Borenkind.
Affectionately known as "GiGi" by her family and childhood friends, Merchel was a woman of remarkable kindness, quiet strength, and unwavering devotion to those she loved. Throughout her life, she touched countless people with her warmth, generosity, wisdom, and radiant smile.
Born and raised in White Plains, Merchel graduated from White Plains High School before earning top honors at Westchester Business Institute. She dedicated more than 30 years of her career to IBM Corporation, where she was known for her professionalism, intelligence, and commitment to excellence. Following her retirement from IBM, she continued serving others through her work with Lawrence Home Care, helping coordinate hospice care until her retirement in 2025.
In 1997, Merchel met the love of her life, Carly Borenkind. After reconnecting several years later, they married on May 3, 2008, building a loving partnership that spanned more than two decades. Together, they created a life grounded in compassion, friendship, laughter, and unwavering love.
Merchel was deeply devoted to her family and friends. She found joy in caring for others, celebrating life's everyday moments, and surrounding those she loved with kindness and encouragement. Her beautiful spirit, resilience, and genuine warmth left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know her.
Merchel's legacy lives on through Carly, her family, her many friends, and all whose lives she enriched through her generosity and love.
