writers workshop
The LOFT’s Writers Workshop is a virtual creative space designed for LGBTQ+ writers looking to grow, connect, and receive feedback on their work in a supportive and constructive environment. Whether you're working on a novel, short story, poem, screenplay, memoir, or other creative projects, this workshop provides an opportunity to elevate your writing through thoughtful peer critique. The group meets on the 3rd Wednesday of each month from 7:30 PM to 9:00 PM (Eastern Time), with occasional in-person gatherings held throughout the year. Participation is free, and registration is required to receive the Zoom link.
Writers who wish to receive feedback on their work must submit it by the 2nd Wednesday of the month and are expected to review all other submissions. For longer pieces (over six pages), an early bird submission option is available by the 1st Wednesday, giving readers more time to review. Once submitted, writers gain access to all peer submissions and are provided a guide to help prepare brief, constructive critiques. Critiques are shared orally during the workshop in a collaborative, friendly environment.
The workshop welcomes most creative genres, with fiction and poetry being the most commonly submitted. While LGBTQ+ themes are encouraged, they are not required. One of the workshop's key strengths is offering feedback through a queer lens, which can enrich the depth and authenticity of your work. The maximum submission length is 1,650 words, formatted in 12 pt., double-spaced font. A sliding scale model allows for flexibility: if four or fewer people submit by the deadline, writers may be given a 24-hour extension to add content, as determined by the facilitator.
To submit for the first time, writers should email writersworkshop@loftgaycenter.org by the 2nd Wednesday at 6:00 PM ET to receive a link to the shared folder. After the initial submission, access to the folder will be granted for future participation. Writers are reminded to follow formatting standards carefully, including clear labeling of their name and adherence to submission length, to ensure fairness to all participants.
The Writers Workshop is proudly centered around mutual respect, shared learning, and creative growth. It is co-sponsored by The LOFT LGBTQ+ Community Center, and also features a Resources Page with opportunities to publish your work. Whether you're a seasoned writer or just getting started, this workshop offers a welcoming community where your voice is celebrated and your craft can thrive.
